Public television, as we all know, is not commercial in nature. While you will never see ads on Sesame Street or any other PBS programming, they still need to find a way to bring in money to operate. This is the purpose of the pledge drives your local PBS station will occasionally have. This is the pledge edition of Kansas City Week in Review that happened during my internship. It differed from the normal setup in the following ways:

  • Instead of being pre-taped, it was done live.

  • One of the normal backdrops was taken out, and you could clearly see volunteers taking phone calls and accepting pledges.

Once again, I was on "Nick Cam" for this edition. In addition to shooting Nick, I also had a couple of pledge-specific shots which required me to physically move the camera to another spot, turn around and get my shot. If you've seen my documentary "Johnson County's Young Democrats," this edition may seem familiar to you. That's because I used footage from this edition in the documentary as it related to my subject matter.
